Solid control summarize

Solids control is a technique serving a drilling rig to separate the cuttings/solids out. If not cuttings will bring bad effect. Fluids carry out the cuttings out of well surface. Normally, a solids control system contains five stages: shale shaker, vacuum degasser, desander, desilter, and centrifuge. The shale shaker separates solids with diameter above 75μm, the desander addresses solids from 46-74μm, and the desilter segregates solids between 15-45μm. Sometimes , mud cleaner replaces separated desander and desilter. When air enters the drilling fluids, a vacuum degasser separates the air out of fluids. When there is no air in the mud, the degasser works as a big agitator.

Mud tank is the platform for all of above listed equipment. After separating the solids, pumps transfer the clean mud  into the borehole again as a circulation.

Recent advances in solids control include the creation of a closed loop system which allows for increased environmental control and reduction in the potential for spills of drilling fluids. More and more drilling contractors have either utilized or are considering the implementation of closed loop systems, particularly for hydro-fracturing operations.

Solids control platform

For complete mud system, mud tanks are treated as platform as they are vessels containing the drilling fluids. They are carrier for solids control equipment. Including shale shaker, mud cleaner, decanter centrifuge, mud agitators and pumps.
