In oil and gas drilling, a mud solid control system is often used. It can be said that mud solid control is one of the essential equipment in the natural gas and oil drilling process. The five main pieces of equipment in a mud solid control system are, in order: a shale shaker, a degasser, a desander, a desilter, and a centrifuge. All of this equipment is installed on top of the mud tank.

Mud solid control operation procedure

1. The drilling mud is fed from the borehole through the pipeline into the shale shaker buffer box.The shaker can be equipped with a vibrating screen mesh ranging from API 35 to API 120 in order to separate the larger drill cuttings. The liquid portion will pass through the mesh screen and into the sand pit.

2.Mud from the sand pit will overflow into the next compartment.The vacuum degasser will then draw the mud into the degasser, and the treated mud will overflow into the degasser compartment.

3. The desander feed pump will collect the slurry from the degasser compartment and deliver it to the desander cyclone for separation of particles ranging from 47 to 76 microns. The solid portion will fall from the desander nozzle, while the fluid will flow into the desander chamber.

4. The other one will pick up the slurry from the desander chamber and feed it into the desilter cyclone.The solid particles will drop through the desilter nozzles, while the fluid will flow into the desilter chamber.

5、Then, the slurry pump or screw pump draws the slurry from the desludging chamber and transfers it to the decanter centrifuge, where it separates the clean slurry with particle sizes ranging from 2 to 7 microns in the centrifugal chamber.

6、After each tank chamber is de-sludged, the resulting mixture is referred to as net slurry.This slurry can be either suctioned or discharged by the mixing pump into any of the slurry tanks for transfer or new slurry mixing.

7、All clean slurry tanks are equipped with suction lines and valves for slurry pump.

Solids control hydrocyclone is 2nd and 3rd phase equipment. In oil drilling solids control hydrocyclones are widely used to separate particles sized 15~74 microns

Oilfield drilling mud process request many different steps. Hydrocyclone separators come after shale shaker. They mainly get rid of solids (also called cuttings) of 15~74 microns. Hydrocyclones including many models including 2", 3", 4", 5", 6", 8", 10", and 12". But popular hydrocyclone in solids control are 4", 10". All models division is according to max. diameter of cones.

With different diameters they will get rid of various particles. For example, 4" cone will get rid of 15~47 microns solids and we call it as hydrocyclone desilter or desilter separator. The 10" cones are the desander separator separating solids larger than 47 microns.

Hydorcyclones can become single desander, desilter or combine bottom shaker. If we combine desander cone, desilter cone and shale shaker together then it will become mud cleaner

More hydrocyclone information

Presently, most Hydrocyclones are made of polyurethane. It's a very durable material to bear heavy abrasion and corrosion. For solids control, the cuttings in drilling fluid will abrade much on cones internal wall. Also some corrosive chemicals and oil content will lead cones wear. But even the cones work in 1 year synchronously with oil rig it won't break down. That's why contractors select high quality polyurethane cones. Moreover, some manufacturer will embed ceramic in cones boy or the drop in Apex for longer service life

The hydrocyclones are with the victaulic coupling on inlet and output groove. Or there are bolts connecting flange on ports and pipes on separator. Some supplier will provide the combination design, for example, the inlet is flange and bolt type but output is with coupling

For some desilter hydrocyclones may request the elbow (180° or 90°). Actually, we don't suggest clients change little wearing parts for hydrocyclone but the cyclones assembly. As different suppliers design vary significantly on little parts. 100% insured compliance will be best solution for any parts.
