Shaker screens patterns

To distinguish screen patterns, there are many references or methods. Firstly, we can judge it according to appearance. Such as flat panels and corrugated panels. Sometimes, we’ll call it flat-panel “PWP”(Trademark of Derrick® corporation), and we’ll call panel with corrugation wave “PMD” (Trademark of Derrick® corporation). It’s an abbreviation of “pyramid”.

Then, we divide shaker screen panels as per the installation way or compression way. There are screens installed by tensioning hook at the side, we call them hook strap screens; there are screens compressed by wedge blocks we call them wedged panels; there are screen panels pressed or pushed by atmospheric, most of such panels are framed panels; there are screens pushed by side tools and fixed by a pin on notch; there are also screens pressed by hydraulic pressure, such screens can be hook strap or framed; furthermore, there are screens pulled by hook and the tensioning unit, too.

Thirdly, we can find there are screens with frames, without back metal support plate, without plastic or composite support. That means different materials and procedures.

Fourthly, many people don’t know there are screens made of different raw materials. Such as stainless steel wire mesh screen, polyurethane screen, steel wedge screen panel, 16Mn screen panels, and so on

Fifthly, there are composite framed screens and metal-framed screens. Among these screens, there are flat panels and corrugated panels.

We have talked about differences among the above patterns of the screen. What are the different features then? Considering the flat panel and corrugated panel, the difference is the effective area of the screen. Yes, the panels with waves hold a larger area, so we can say their flow rate or efficiency is higher.

Compared screens with each other on installation way, we’ll find users prefer the fast and easy way. Among these installation ways, some hook strap screens are more popular, while some screen panels pressed by pressure or hydraulic are preferred, too. However, considering the consumables and wearing parts cost, a wedge blocked panel is a more economical choice.

The material of screen frame difference leads to different production procedures and techniques. A composite frame screen provides a longer shelf life and service life. For some models of the screen, composite frames are lighter than metal frame panels. Composite framed screens hold a better performance on rust-resistant, however, steel-framed ones hold a better performance on high-temperature resistance.

Material of screen cloth defines screen application and performance. PU framed screens can be used in sludge treatment or civil construction separation but with lower viscosity, PU hook strap (flexible) screens can be used in the mineral industry. S.S screens are suitable for oil drilling mud process, mud waste management and so on. While the 16Mn screens are mostly used in stone sieving or other jobs that request higher abrasion resistance.

If we take the screen cloth configuration in consideration, there are oblong apertures and square apertures. Some panels are holding all layers with square hole wire mesh, while some panels are holding one layer or two layers of rectangular hole mesh. The difference are the conductance or the penetration efficiency and the exact separation point.

  2. Wire mesh size and the wire diameter

Why do we need multiple-layers mesh?

The supporting layer is the base of screen. It is woven by coarse wire with large opening. It can support surface screen and won't affect the conductance or filtration performance. For the middle layer, it can help get the accurate cut point as per D100 with proper selection

Compared to other layers cloth, the top layer screen on surface is easy to damage since the extra fine diameter and aperture. Multiple-layer mesh screen enhance the strength of screen cloth in deed. And even there is slight damage on screen surface it can be operated continuously.

Screens made by different manufacturers

Multiple-layer shaker screens made by different manufacturers will vary from each other. So there is API number to let screen mesh size be interchangeable and accurate for certain phase drilling mud process

For example, manufacturer A supplied screen sized 100mesh without API number may be in API 80 since the different layers number and mesh size, as well as the diameter. Manufacturer B supplied screen sized API 60 may be equals to MG 80 mesh or even finer.

Shale shaker screens technology reflected on many different aspect. Such as screen frame, wire mesh cloth, material and appearance, etc. We know there are different types screen frame. Both on material and holes. What is the principle/technology and what is future tendency?

Manufacturers use different shapes for shaker screen panels to attempt to reduce the quantity of panels on each frame while still providing maximum rigidity and support for the attached wire mesh or screen cloth. The purpose of reducing these panels is to maximize the usable screening area, as the walls of each panel can obstruct the mesh, preventing its use; this is known as "blanking."

The non-blanked screening area of shaker screens is widely used as a selling feature, the more screen surface you have available to work the more efficient your shaker becomes and therefore can handle a higher quantity of fluid. This is an important issue affecting users' selection on screens

Binding technique decides shale shaker screen adhesive force on screen frame. If the binding technique is poor the screen will be broken very soon since the cuttings will abrade wire mesh via the distance. The binding agent, designed to maximize adhesion to both materials while withstanding high heat, strong vibration, abrasive cuttings, and corrosive drilling fluids, is the material used to bind the mesh to the screen frame.

Plastic or composite shaker screens tend not to use adhesives but rather heat the mesh and melt it into the screen frame to form a bond. Great bond of composite screens will be stronger than steel frame screen binding

3D shaker screen technology

3D Screen Technology- One of the more recent advances in oilfield screen technology has brought us the "3D screen", this technology is an innovative method for increasing the screening area of a shale shaker without the need to build larger, heavier and more expensive shakers. It has been the advanced tendency in shaker screen industry past decade.

Generally, manufacturers increase the 3D screen area by 25%. That means the effective area or the non-blanked area is much larger. So the handling capacity is much higher. And it helps to get better filtration result but less mud loss possibility.

Manufacturers design the wave-like shapes on these screens, resembling corrugated cardboard when viewed from the side, to increase the surface area of the panel without requiring larger machines.

The innovator is Derrick Corp of USA. Such 3D shaker screen technology got most users' appreciation. Various claims exist regarding the reason for the improved performance of these 3D screens, such as increasing the screening area of each panel, which distributes the load across more surface area and therefore tends to decrease wear compared to other types of shaker screens.
